Wrapping up and what you'd do next

Finish with a short summary, the main trade-offs and what you'd do with more time.

What they’re listening for

  • • Can you summarize your own design clearly?
  • • Do you know its weak spots?
  • • Do you think about running it in production?

Many candidates just stop when time runs out. A 30-second wrap-up leaves a much better last impression: what you built, the trade-offs you chose and what you'd do next.

Stiff vs. natural

Interviewer: “We've got about five minutes left. Anything you'd like to add?”

Sounds stiff

“No, I think that's everything. The design is complete.”

Sounds natural

“Yeah, maybe a quick recap. We've got a simple service behind a load balancer, a cache and read replicas for redirects, and failover for the main database. The big trade-off is that we read from replicas, so a brand-new link might take a moment to work everywhere. For a link shortener, I think that's fine. With more time, I'd look at analytics, and I'd watch cache hit rate and redirect latency, since those would tell us first when something's wrong.”

  • A recap in three parts is easy to follow.
  • Naming the trade-off shows you made choices on purpose.
  • Monitoring shows you think about running the system, not just drawing it.
  • “The design is complete” sounds like you don't see any weak spots.

Moment: Time's almost up, and you didn't get to everything.

Sounds stiff

“Sorry, I didn't have time to finish. I wanted to talk about analytics, security, rate limiting, sharding, monitoring…”

Sounds natural

“We didn't get to analytics, but quickly: I'd send click events to a queue and count them separately, so counting clicks never slows down the redirect itself. Happy to go deeper if there's time, but that's the gist.”

  • One sentence on the most important missing piece beats a long list.
  • No apology needed. Running out of time is normal.
  • “That's the gist” is a natural way to close.

Wrapping up

  • “Maybe a quick recap…”Starting the summary.
  • “The big trade-off we made was…”Naming your main choice.
  • “If I had more time, I'd look at…”The next step.
  • “In production, I'd want to watch…”Monitoring and alerts.
  • “The part I'm least sure about is…”Being honest about weak spots.
  • “That's the gist. Happy to go deeper anywhere.”Ending cleanly.
