Culture questions and life outside work

Let them see a person (hobbies, pets, where you live) and connect it back to work lightly.

What they’re listening for

  • • Are you someone people would enjoy working with?
  • • How do you like to work?
  • • Do you have a life outside the screen?

Stiff vs. natural

Interviewer: “What do you like to do outside of work?”

Sounds stiff

“I like reading books and traveling.”

Sounds natural

“Honestly, a lot of my free time goes to my dog, Biscuit. She's a very energetic border collie, so we do a lot of long walks. I've also gotten into bouldering this year. I'm not good at it yet, but there's something nice about a problem you can't fix by adding more logs.”

  • Specific details (the dog's name and breed) make it real.
  • The small tech joke connects your life back to work without forcing it.

Interviewer: “What kind of team culture do you work best in?”

Sounds stiff

“I work best in a team with good communication and collaboration.”

Sounds natural

“I like teams where it's normal to ask “dumb” questions in the public channel. My last team had a rule: if you were stuck for more than thirty minutes, you had to ask someone. It saved us so much time, and a lot of quiet suffering.”

  • A concrete example beats buzzwords like “collaboration.”
  • “Quiet suffering” is a relatable, light exaggeration.

Life talk that fits

  • “Honestly, a lot of my free time goes to…”Opening up about hobbies.
  • “I've recently gotten into…”Something new you're learning.
  • “I'm not good at it yet, but…”Being a beginner, with charm.
  • “On weekends you can usually find me…”Painting a picture.
  • “It's a nice break from staring at screens.”A relatable close.

Humor and life talk

Works well

  • • Pets, hobbies, weather and being a beginner at something
  • • Small tech jokes about your own life

Skip it

  • • Anything that sounds like you dislike working
  • • Party stories, or very personal topics
